Dehumidification is an essential process in any indoor farming facility, and the choice of dehumidification method depends on several factors, including the size of the farm, the crop characteristics and the desired climate and humidity levels. We discuss three solutions.
The three methods:
- The first solution is dehumidification with fresh outside air. It is the least expensive solution but only works when the climate allows for it. Additional (mechanical) cooling and dehumidification are still necessary, and the solution may result in less uniformity.
- The second solution is dehumidification with condensate drying solutions, which can work for a wide range of crops in higher dew point conditions. A standalone or integrated solution can be used. An integrated solution is more complex and expensive, but it reduces operating and maintenance costs and improves precision.
- The third solution is dehumidification with a desiccant dryer solution, which are better suitable for lower dew point conditions. A desiccant dryer or an adsorption dryer is a piece of industrial equipment that uses desiccant materials to eliminated water from the air channelled through it. This solution is more effective at lower temperatures but is more expensive and requires more maintenance and uses more energy in most common growing areas than other options.
